Letter from Star Geldenhuys
Star Geldenhuys, an educator at Percy Mdala in George, shares the inspiring
experience of Noluvo Jaji, with Khanya Project Manager, Christelle
Barkhuizen.
Hi Christelle
Noluvo Jaji has been a learner at Percy Mdala since 2000, when she enrolled
in Grade 8. Her primary school education was done at Thembelitsha Primary School
(one of our feeder schools). Noluvo has a physical handicap and it is more
difficult for her to move from one place to another and yet she is always the
first one to get to class. Her attitude is one that inspires us all. She walks
to school and the school is on top of a hill, so her walk is an uphill one every
day. When I asked her what was wrong with her leg, she replied that there is
nothing 'wrong' with it as she was born this way. An amazingly mature
outlook on life. She then did tell me that it is shorter than the other, and
that there is no femur, hence what appears to be a prosthesis. Needless to say,
she has oodles of self confidence and is one of our star pupils. Her subjects
are Xhosa, English, Afrikaans, Maths, Science and Biology. Her favourite is
Physical Science. When I asked her opinion of the Master Maths program - she
bubbled over with all the right things to say - "It makes thinking easier ' you
learn to apply what you have been taught ' you can use your knowledge ' it is
very challenging".
She is a lovely child and we all wish her the best in whatever career she
chooses.
Regards, Star.
