K-Zone Announcement

As part of our on-going drive to make platform-independent software freely available to schools, Khanya announces the release of unit 1 of the K-Zone software. This software is available in 3 languages: English, Afrikaans and IsiXhosa. Unit 1 is aimed at Grades 1 to 3 and focuses on Literacy. All the Learning Outcomes of Literacy are addressed and the material contains both Interactive Activities which can be used in the computer laboratory (or on an Interactive Electronic Whiteboard) as well as Educator Guides for each Grade. The Educator Guide gives the educator:

  • The Learning Outcomes and Assessment Standards addressed by each activity
  • A general description of the activity
  • Hints for educators to provide learner support
  • Prior learning required
  • Suggestions for classroom activities

The activities target a broad range of knowledge and skills and deploy the constructivist approach. Learners will learn by doing which gives them opportunities to discover. This is followed by a teaching moment for consolidation and reinforcement of the concept

Activities are bundled in units (+/- 6 activities per unit). Each unit has a theme and each activity takes approximately 30 minutes to complete and progression is built into each activity. Again, we offer the opportunity for the activities to be completed by one learner or two learners (to accommodate labs where there are 2 learners per workstation)

The next Literacy unit of K-Zone will be available as from July and will target learners in Grades 4 to 6

Khanya facilitators will deliver a K-Zone CD to all Khanya primary schools which offer teaching to Grades 1 to 3, by the middle of June 2009. The Khanya facilitator will workshop the material with the educators to familiarize them with its use

If your school has not received a CD by middle June 2009, please contact Charlotta Taczalski by emailing her at ctaczalski@pgwc.gov.za

Any feedback/comments about the software may also be emailed to the same address.
