New Beginnings in StellenboschAt the end of 2008, Khanya Science and the then District Co-ordinator for the Cape Winelands Region, Harriet Lakay, proposed the establishment of four Khanya Science Laboratories in schools in Stellenbosch. The schools chosen were: Kayamandi Secondary, Luckhoff Secondary, Cloetesville Secondary. and Rhenish Girls’ High. A year later, these schools celebrate the fact that they have received a fully installed Smartboard, laptop and data projector. They also received Crocodile Clips Science software and Data Harvest’s Science sensors. The former allows the teacher to simulate investigations or simply to play preset simulations contained in ‘topic folders’ which complement the explanation of difficult concepts. The later allows both the teacher and the learners to conduct real, scientific investigations wherein the latest data-gathering technology can be integrated. Training has already begun at all four schools. |
