i Can Animate Workshop

On Tuesday 5 October 2010, delegates from six primary schools (Cypress, Amstelhof, York Road, Wynberg Girls Junior, Starling and Alicedale) attended a very exciting and successful animation workshop at Cypress Primary in Bridgetown, Athlone.

The principal, an educator and two learners from each school attended the workshop together with Khanya representatives, Gail Ahrends, Joseph Rhodes, Shahyda Esau and Ntsiki Masiba.  Joanne Anderson of “Think Ahead” was Apple’s representative at the session which was sponsored by Café Venda from Kwa Zulu Natal.

The software programme I can Animate was installed on a Mac book for each team and Alan Goldberg and two assistants guided the groups through skills and knowledge of the software. Although the goal was to complete an animation project depicting the theme ‘Global Warming’, the learning experience included: reading, spelling, retelling, geography, planning, order, collaboration and many other aims and assessment standards.

The finished product was exported into iMovie to add Sound effects, voice over and transitions. Showtime revealed that the learners, their principal and educator had worked together very well and had used the hard and software as tools to deliver an exciting curriculum project within 3 hours.

The workshop was such a success and the project produced by each group of such high standard that they have been encouraged to enter the iLife Competition and in an Animation competition.
