760 000 pupils learning with aid of computers - Cape Times, 3 April 2009

Staff Writer

More than 760 000 pupils in 1 000 Western Cape schools, many of them in poor communities, are now able to learn using computers, the Western Cape Education Department says.

The department yesterday celebrated a major milestone for its Khanya project – which focuses on using technology to improve and complement teaching and learning.

Ingrid Graham of Khanya’s public-private partnerships’ arm said computer laboratories had now been installed at 1 029 Western Cape Schools since 2001.

A function was held at Capricorn Primary School in Vrygrond yesterday to celebrate Khanya reaching and passing the 1 000 school mark.

Ron Swartz, head of education in the Western Cape, said that Khanya’s role involved more than installing computers and teaching computer literacy.

“Khanya has always been about developing models for electronic education and to develop best practice by delivering the curriculum in ways that are especially suited to poor communities,”  Swatz said.
