Khanya Facilitates the Pilot of WAT Digital Dictionary

The University of Stellenbosch (US) and the Khanya Project are collaborating to test the digital version of its Afrikaans dictionary, Woordeboek van die Afrikaanse Taal (WAT).

Khanya is piloting WAT at five of its schools in the Southern Cape on behalf of the Western Cape Education Department (WCED). Educators at these schools attended a three hour introductory course at Wesbank Primary facilitated by the developers of WAT.

The digital WAT is a comprehensive electronic research resource with an advanced search function. The digital WAT, which offers invaluable support for effective communication in Afrikaans, is useful for all subjects.

The Khanya-WAT sub-project aims, among others, to determine whether the digital WAT can be used as an effective learner resource. Educators and learners will provide feedback to enable the WCED Directorate of Curriculum Development to assess whether the WAT software should be made available to all schools.
