Gene Louw Primary
Situated in Amanda Glen in the Northern Suburbs of Cape Town, Gene Louw Primary has served the surrounding community since 1984. Tremendous growth in the Northern Suburbs has seen learner numbers climb tremendously over the past fifteen years with the result that the school has had to self-fund the building of an additional twenty classrooms to ensure that quality education continues as a priority at the school.
As part of their vision to provide first class education, Gene Louw Primary established two computer laboratories. One is used exclusively by the Foundation Phase learners where they develop computer skills while working with programs like Cami maths, Cami perceptual, Readers are Leaders, Softeach Computer and word processing and Paint. From an early age learners are thus encouraged to see technology as an integral part of the learning process and they are all comfortable, confident and capable users.
The second laboratory is used by the Senior Phase learners who do more advanced work and build on the skills they acquired in the Foundation Phase. They use Microsoft Office, Evalunet, reading programs and mathematics programs. Most of these learners will have access to some form of technology in their homes and they use technology for research and for the presentation of assignments as well as the delivery of oral presentations using PowerPoint.
Gene Louw Primary has a dream of eventually establishing a computer and data projector (linked to their network) in every classroom and they join the Khanya Project in 2011 with a view towards taking the first step towards achieving this dream. Once this is in place, Gene Louw Primary learners will really have the world at their fingertips with the internet in every classroom.
