Vorentoe Primary

The exceptional neatness of Vorentoe Primary is an early indicator of a school that is very well managed. The reality does not disappoint. This school has always envisaged using technology to educate their learners and they initiated the process by obtaining a bank loan to purchase eleven computers in 2002.

This clearly was not suitable for the number of learners at the school. The computers only ran Windows 3.11 for workgroups and thus could not support curriculum delivery. Educators increasingly felt that their mode of teaching was outdated and that they and their learners were being left behind. In 2003 they approached the Khanya Project for inclusion in the programme to deliver the curriculum through Information and Communications Technology.

The staff and learners were very motivated in their quest to establish a centre to serve the requirements of the school. They quickly obtained permission to convert two rooms into a laboratory and made the required changes for the infrastructure. The laboratory was equipped to house twenty three computers and Vorentoe Primary were poised to move forward into the future.

All educators have been trained by a Khanya facilitator in the seven ICT modules. They are able to use the educational software and find that it provides depth to their lessons. While initially some of the educators were a little apprehensive about using the technology for curriculum delivery, their confidence in themselves and in the power of technology to do the job has grown with their skills. Today they are all able to take learners to the laboratory, conduct interesting and effective lessons and maintain all administrative records.

Learners eagerly visit their laboratory and are involved in and committed to their own learning. Because of class sizes, learners work in pairs at a work station. This is beneficial as two heads often prove to be better than one but it would be desirable in the future to add sufficient computers so all learners can work at their own work station.

Situated in a sub-economic community, Vorentoe Primary gets little to no financial support from the community and all initiatives have to be self-funded. This only serves to make them more determined to utilize all of their facilities and opportunities to the maximum.
