Eikendal Primary

Eikendal Primary is situated in the Kraaifontein area and serves the widespread communities of Eikendal, Scottsville, Scottsdene, Bloekombos and Wallacedene. The learners at this school face a number of daily challenges that have their roots in the informal settlements in which they live, the high unemployment levels among their parents and the single-parent nature of most of their families.

The school strives to offer security and opportunities to their learners and it was with this in mind that they established their own computer laboratory in 1994. Here the focus has been on computer literacy and a great deal has been achieved in exposing the learners and educators to technology. Falling Literacy and Numeracy results over the past few years, however, have brought about the realisation that the primary focus in the laboratory needs to be on curriculum delivery and Eikendal Primary turned to Khanya to help improve learner performance in these areas as well as in other learning areas.

The staff at Eikendal Primary is very excited about their Khanya laboratory and highly motivated to use it for curriculum delivery. Some of the educators were initially sceptical about their own ability to use the technology but with the guidance of the computer tutor at the school, the Future Kids facilitator and their Khanya facilitator, any reservations about the technology have been dispelled and replaced with confidence. The staff arranged two follow-up sessions with CAMI and, after the demonstrations and viewing the trail software, the governing body purchased the software. The staff are enjoying this software tremendously. The staff has a vision of integrating ICT and traditional teaching methods to enhance the learning experience for the learners, making it more visual and memorable for them.

The infrastructure for their new Khanya laboratory has been completed and the PC’s have been installed. Educators and learners are eager to explore the new technology and the governing body is setting up community literacy classes to empower the parent community and to help with the sustainability of the laboratory.
