Belvue Primary

Educators at Belvue Primary School in Belhar took the initiative and established their computer laboratory themselves in 1999. They purchased 21 computers and employed a computer teacher who was paid by the governing body. The initial focus of the school was the empowerment of educators and learners by developing their skills in the effective use of Information and Communications Technology (ITC). Belvue therefore provided evening classes for educators and members of the community.

In 2002 the school approached the Khanya Project for assistance in using their computer laboratory more effectively. Schools, like Belvue, that receive support from the Khanya Project, benefit from the skills, knowledge and experience that the Khanya team brings to the facilitation of Curriculum delivery using ICT. Khanya's initial assistance to Belvue therefore included, but was not limited to, the reorganisation of the laboratory infrastructure. The Khanya Project also provided five computers, electrical points, an air conditioner, work surfaces and a comprehensive basket of appropriate educational software. More recently an additional twenty computers were added in an upgrade to the facility and the Project is currently installing three Electronic Interactive White Boards.

Educators consider the laboratory an essential part of the empowerment process for learners and the community. They are very positive about technology and are involved in the laboratory on a daily basis. Everyone regards it as a positive addition to the school, one which helps them to achieve their curriculum goals. They receive regular support from the Khanya Project in the form of training by Khanya Facilitators. They receive training in the use of educational software and this facilitates the process that enables educators to integrate the educational software with the curriculum purposefully and confidently.

After five years of regular exposure to technology in their very own laboratory, learners at Belvue Primary are competent users of technology. Learners are able to navigate their way through tasks set by their educator with confidence and they respond well to the immediate assessment and the progress they are able to make.

The LSEN educator in particular has seen a huge difference in her work, thanks to the integration of technology as the laboratory provides support to both educators and learners.

Educators and learners are looking forward to their new technology acquisitions – the Electronic Interactive White Boards and the impact this will have on all who are exposed to it.

With the opportunities afforded to Belvue Primary comes a responsibility to ensure maximum effective utilisation of the technology. This is something the entire community is committed to.
