Scottsville Secondary

Serving a very poor community, Scottsville High is extremely burdened by the lack of finance. Learners at this school do not have the resources to compete with the learners at more advantaged schools in the area and are thus not as competitive in the job market. While the desire to introduce technology at the school was present, financial constraints prevented them from doing so.

In 2004 Scottsville High became a partner of the Khanya Project and the establishment of a laboratory now enables them to provide their learners and their community with the opportunity to become computer literate. In addition to their Khanya computer laboratory, they have recently received two further laboratories, a Geography laboratory and a CAT laboratory that came into use in 2007.

Some trepidation did initially exist among staff and learners about how they would cope with the technology as for most it was a completely new experience. However, after a few initial hiccups this rapidly grew into excitement as they came to grips with software and became competent in its use. All learners are now exposed to the laboratory and they eagerly anticipate their visits to it.

Educators have responded with enthusiasm to their training by BestBit. This took place on Friday afternoons and their degree of commitment was evidenced in their 100% attendance of these sessions. Educators use the laboratory frequently – for their own work as well as for lessons with their learners.

Scottsville High may be new to the world of technology, but they are determined to ensure that their learners gain the utmost from the opportunity afforded to them to acquire computer skills. Their goal is to provide each learner with the opportunity to become computer literate by the time they exit the school and to use the technology to enhance the learning experience of each learner. They also plan to implement computer classes for the broader community who have been deprived of this career creating opportunity in the past as part of their sustainability plan.
