Isilimela Secondary
Isilimela Secondary were fortunate to be started on their road towards technology by Telkom when this company donated computers to the school to establish a laboratory and they installed Evalunet, a programme for most school related subjects. Telkom has also subsequently upgraded the server and installed a data projector in the laboratory.
Khanya donated an extra six computers and the Master Maths Programme. Despite classes being large, the Maths learners eagerly attend lessons in the laboratory. They also use the computers after school to improve their maths skills. Lessons are taught online in certain subjects and they have extended their basket of software to include English, so this department also makes use of the facility. With the introduction of CAT at grade 10 level in 2006 and the high demand to use the laboratory for computer literacy, it became clear that an additional laboratory was essential if the progress made in the field of using ICT for curriculum delivery was to be maintained. With the assistance and guidance of the Khanya Project, this laboratory is now in the process of being realized.
Their Internet connection was damaged when the Joe Slovo informal settlement was ravaged by fire but despite this setback, learners use the centre during break and after school. They have plans to start a computer club in the afternoon to enhance the learner's computer literacy and improve their chances of competing on equal footing when applying for employment.
A group of educators, including the Principal, attend computer literacy classes offered by a Khanya facilitator and they are doing very well.
