A Project of the Western Cape Education Department
KHANYA SCHOOLS

Sophakama Primary

Sophakama Primary was established in 1998 in the informal settlement of Du Noon on the west coast of Cape Town. The first school established in Du Noon, it serves a huge sprawling community consists of approximately 65 000 people. The community is defined by the extremely high unemployment rate (80%) which results in abject poverty and a high rate of crime.

Sophakama Primary have managed to acquire a couple of computers that have been used to train educators in the basics of computer literacy. This has, however, never been sufficient to entertain the notion of introducing technology to their learners.

Their inclusion in the Khanya Project in 2011 will see the establishment of a computer laboratory at the school where learners will have regular structured access to technology. Through the application of technology integrated curriculum delivery, educators at Sophakama Primary hopes to create learners who are confident, independent and multi-skilled. Educators are excited about being involved in the implementation of technology and are very positive about the openness and participatory nature of the curriculum development that technology and Khanya encourage.

Computer literacy will be a natural by product of the use of technology for curriculum delivery. Through the development of these skills, learners at Sophakama Primary will understand the impact of technology on all aspects of their lives and, through their exposure in the Khanya laboratory, they will have the skills to ensure that they are able to participate meaningfully in a technology driven economy.

Technology is set to transform the face of teaching and learning at Sophakama Primary and all the role players keenly anticipate the changes that lie ahead for them. Technology promises to bring the world into the classroom for these learners as they begin to explore the internet and use learning tools other than the black board and the textbook.
