West Riding Primary
West Riding Primary was established in temporary prefabricated facilities in Table View in 2008. The school, which started off only offering foundation phase education, moved into its permanent location in 2009 and by 2011 it has grown to accommodated up to and including grade 6 learners.
The multi-cultural community served by West Riding Primary comprises predominantly single parent and single income homes. Extra funding from parents is therefore not something the school can rely upon and they have not been able to introduce technology in any significant way to their learners. In 2009 they did manage to purchase a few second hand computers from a local high school and the WCED recently provided administrative computers so, in a small way, steps towards technology inclusion are being made.
It is only now with their inclusion in the Khanya Project in 2011 that their dream of technology integrated curriculum can become a reality. For the first time they will have technology to which the learners will have regular, structured access.
Educators are keen to introduce their learners to software that will enhance their literacy and numeracy levels. Technology that will ensure interesting lessons that captivate the imagination of their learners and re-engages them in the learning process. With access to the internet, learners at West Riding will also have access to relevant information thus ensuring real life learning.
The learners at West Riding Primary have become aware of the pervasive influence of technology as they see it beginning to influence all aspects of their lives – in the shops, in the media and in the way they need to interact with the world. With the skills developed in the Khanya laboratory, they will now be able to participate fully in this world.
