Gardens Commercial High
Situated in The Company Gardens in Cape Town, Gardens Commercial High has always been a commercial school. In 2006 with the introduction of the Further Education and Training (F.E.T) band, Gardens Commercial became a Focus School for Business, Commerce and Management and learners from across the peninsula travel by train, bus and taxi to attend this school.
As a commercial school, Gardens Commercial had recognised the importance for their learners of technology and had established a computer laboratory in which basic computer literacy skills as well as what was known as Computer Science was taught. When they were identified as a Focus School, they realised that their learners would be expected to leave Gardens equipped with all the skills needed in the workplace and it was vital that they were able to use all available technology.
Their existing computer laboratory has been upgraded with new LCD screens and workstations and an additional laboratory for the teaching of CAT has been established. In addition, eight classrooms were fitted with Interactive Electronic WhiteBoards, data projectors and notebooks. In their upgraded and thoroughly modern facilities, learners in all grades use the technology for research, for the typing of projects and for keyboard skills training. The accessibility and availability of technology has greatly improved the quality of the work submitted by learners and it has allowed educators to be more creative in their delivery of the curriculum.
Training in the use of the technology has been provided by an outsourced company, Radical Learning and educators are keen to learn more. Educators and learners enjoy engaging with the technology which has added depth to the learning experience at Gardens Commercial High.
