Observatory Junior
Over the years the demographics of Observatory Primary School have changed significantly. Today, more than 96% of the learners are Xhosa speaking and Observatory Junior is no longer a community based school; rather, many of the learners travel great distances daily in order to attend this progressive multilingual school.
The dedicated and committed staff and parents launched a fundraising campaign that included a search for sponsors so that they would be eligible for a partnership with the Khanya Project. They became part of the Khanya Project in 2003 and they are justifiably proud of their computer laboratory in which learners learn how to access information using the Internet and other resource material and they learn basic computer literacy skills.
Aside from the provision of the technology and the educational software used in the laboratory, Khanya has trained all staff in the use of the technology to deliver the curriculum. Khanya certificates in hand, educators at Observatory Junior do not consider their training complete; rather, they are constantly trying to upgrade their skill and seek out new software or websites that will be beneficial to their learners. Educators have been empowered through their teaching to be competent, capable and very enthusiastic users of technology for curriculum delivery.
With a dedicated computer educator on hand in the laboratory to assist learners and educators with lessons and technical support, learners visit the laboratory regularly according to a predetermined timetable. Learners enjoy the integration of their various learning areas that occurs in the laboratory and they also use the Internet for research and for projects. In this stimulating environment, learners feel challenged and every lesson in the laboratory is eagerly anticipated.
Observatory Junior look forward to growing the technology at their school – more computers, a greater variety of software, faster Internet services and a variety of technology. This is, however, going to be determined by the availability of funding. In the meantime, Observatory Junior is committed to using what they have optimally for the benefit of the learners.
A visit to this school is inspiring and refreshing. The Principal encourages innovations that have the potential to improve the academic performance of their learners.
