Milnerton High

Founded in 1959 Milnerton High School has grown to an institution that serves a diverse learner population of close on a thousand learners. A dynamic school, Milnerton High prides itself on adapting to accommodate the needs of an ever changing learner body, nurturing the whole child and producing excellent results.

The community served by Milnerton High caters to a broad economic and social spectrum of learners. They are drawn from the wealthy area of Table View as well as the very poor and a large contingent of immigrants from France, Portugal, Italy, China and India. This cultural mix ensures a vibrant atmosphere where learners’ perceptions of society and of other learners are constantly challenged.

With growing pressure from parents to develop skills in technology to ensure that learners had the skills to join the work force, Milnerton High established their own computer laboratories. Here learners were initially introduced to basic computer literacy skills and, in more recent times, to CAT. Thanks to these initiatives, learners at Milnerton High are able to keep up with international standards and modern trends in technology. The technology also enhances resources and research for both educators and learners and it encourages independent learning, research and problem solving.

The school is fortunate in having two dedicated CAT educators who guide the learners through this learning area and the services of an ex-parent who helps with the maintenance of the technology. Educators have embraced technology whole-heartedly in the delivery of the curriculum and they have worked ceaselessly in overcoming any fears or anxiety they may have had surrounding the application of the technology.

In addition to the computer laboratories, Milnerton High has also set up a few computers in a classroom where they are able to focus on Design.

Khanya’s initial involvement at this pro-active school was initially simply the installation of Mindset. The school’s effective use of technology, however, together with the growing need to expand their technology has resulted in the establishment of a third laboratory, a Khanya laboratory. Here the focus is on mathematics and science and any additional available laboratory time is used by the Geography Department and the Languages.

Educators have received training in the use of the mathematics software as well as some training from the subject advisors in the use of geography, design and CAT software. Training has enhanced their ability to present the curriculum succinctly and they are able to produce stimulating lessons that are in line with their learners’ daily life experiences.

Through their successful application of all the technologies available to them, Milnerton High school is certain that they are constantly making progress and are succeeding in keeping their learners up to date. This conviction is affirmed through their partnerships with other local schools and with schools in Britain.

At Milnerton High school technology plays a pivotal role in preparing the learners for a future role in a technology driven society.
