Queens’ Park High
Established over 100 years’ ago in the then elite suburb of Woodstock, Queens’ Park High is now part of a less affluent community and stands surrounded by industry as well as a few residential properties. With separate entrances for girls and boys which date back to a different era, Queens’ Park High has progressed from a school which used to offer practical subjects such as sewing and woodwork, to a school focused on academic excellence. As one of only three schools that accommodates refugees, Queens’ Park also offers French as a language to cater for the difficulties these learners experience with regards language.
Queen's Park is a good example of partnership between Khanya, the school and the private sector. The principal embarked on a hunt for donors to support the infrastructure costs of their Khanya laboratory. Mrs Mary Anne Prinsloo of Grand West has been their primary donor enabling the computer room to be completed.
The electrical upgrade was done with the assistance of the Provincial Administration service providers; the worktops were expertly installed by the school's own educator Mr Andre Van Der Merwe and they have managed to put a few personal touches to the infrastructure such as the animal imprint vertical blinds.
Educators responded very enthusiastically to the training by their Khanya facilitator and they are already finding relief from administrative pressure through the application of their computer skills. These skills they keenly share with their learners in lessons that are visually stimulating and interactive. Lessons in which learners can reinforce concepts learnt in the classroom and are able to progress at a pace determined by their own ability. As educator confidence in their own skills with the technology has grown, so too have visits to the laboratory: classes now have to be booked well in advance to ensure any lesson time in this highly sought after teaching venue. The addition of Mindset Learn – software that encourages active participation in the classroom and is a valuable resource that brings often dull texts to life – has entrenched technology in the learning process for both learners and educators.
With new doors constantly being opened to them by the technology, Queens’ Park High are surging ahead on the information superhighway and they can hardly remember a time when they did not have access to these resources.
