St. Paul's Primary

St Paul’s Primary, situated on the slopes of Signal Hill in the area known as Bo-Kaap, was established in 1858. The school initially served mainly the community of Bo-Kaap, but as people moved out of Cape Town itself, they continued to send their children to St Paul’s and today it serves learners both from the City Central and Bo-Kaap as well as from areas as far afield as Khayelitsha, Langa, Gugulethu and Delft.

St Paul’s Primary has a proud history and they are faithful to their vision of educating their learners in spite of the exploitive and abusive influences that so many of them are exposed to today by instilling in them healthy values and providing them with a quality education. As part of their mission to equip their learners with skills that will enable them to contribute meaningfully towards society, St Paul’s Primary established a computer laboratory where their learners were taught computer literacy. While a great deal was accomplished in this laboratory, the aging equipment increasingly caused frustration as parts could simply not be repaired or replaced.

In 2006 the school became part of the Khanya Project and a second laboratory was planned. The focus here would not be on the development of basic computer skills but on the use of technology for curriculum delivery. With Khanya at their side, training and guidance is being provided that will ensure that St Paul’s learners are part of the Information Age.

While some educators may have been a tad apprehensive about developing the skills that would enable them to utilise this powerful educational tool to its full potential, they have risen to the challenge with enthusiasm and are rapidly becoming competent and confident users. With basic computer literacy modules presented by their Khanya facilitator, educators are now able to complete a variety of administrative tasks electronically. They are also able to do research for their various learning areas on the Internet to improve the quality of their teaching.

Few of the learners at St Paul’s Primary have access to technology at home and it has been a delight for their educators to witness their eagerness as they sit down to learn at a computer in this thoroughly modern environment. For learners with learning difficulties, appropriate educational software has assisted educators in identifying needs and in carrying out interventions. All learners enjoy completing the activities in the Khanya laboratory where learning is both instructional and a great deal of fun. Learners are eager, excited and willing participants in the learning process which now has such an interesting visual and auditory component to it. Learners are also able to use the Internet to research tasks and assignments and this has a positive impact on the quality of the work that they are now able to produce.

Converts to technology before Khanya’s arrival, St Paul’s Primary has gone from fledgling to fully fledged and are confidently striding the information superhighway.
