Trafalgar Secondary
Trafalgar Secondary is one of the oldest schools in Cape Town. It was established in 1912 and is situated on the slopes of Table Mountain with a beautiful view of the city, across the road from the Cape Technicon.
The school established its own computer room a few years back with 45 PCs which are used for teaching computer literacy to all the learners in the school. Judging by the condition in which it has been maintained, one can only imagine that the new Khanya laboratory will also be very well looked after.
The school accepted the responsibility of ensuring that the infrastructure met the specifications required by Khanya and a furniture manufacturer custom made and donated the computer worktops to the school. The laboratory was established in record time thanks to the tireless energy of their enthusiastic principal and project champion. They have 24 PCs in their Khanya laboratory with ADSL connection for 24 hour internet access. The laboratory is indeed a showpiece with its black computers and office chairs and the school is very proud of its new acquisition.
The principal, a real go-getter, wants the school to become a Technology School for the FET role out and he is therefore pursuing all avenues to ensure that they are ready for the arrival of FET. When he heard about Khanya's science sub-project, he quickly raised sufficient funds and Trafalgar now has a media centre with 4 PCs for learners and educators to use for research. Equipment for video conferencing was also donated to the school.
Educators at the school are keen to become computer literate and the Khanya laboratory is already being used regularly by mathematics educators to enhance their teaching using the MasterMaths program. The accounting department has also recently had a boost with the addition of another computer laboratory which is dedicated purely to use for this subject.
The school's vision is to become an ICT School. They plan on offering Computer literacy and specialised ICT training in the near future. They also intend offering courses to the community and businesses in the area to benefit the community and to generate funds to ensure the sustainability of the laboratories.
