Vista High

Vista High School is situated in the region known as the Bo-Kaap in the historic Malay area and, as the name hints, it has a beautiful view of Table Mountain from its position high up on signal hill near the noon day gun. Traditionally, most of the learners came from the Bo-Kaap area, but since the end of the Apartheid era the school attracts learners from Mitchell’s Plain, Kayelitsha, Crossroads and Manenberg.

Despite being a school that does not have funds readily available, Vista High was so determined to empower their learners through technology that they adapted an existing computer laboratory by modifying it to work as a Khanya computer laboratory. The principal mobilized a host of contractors to carry out the alterations including a carpenter who prides himself on his work. To help the school save money, he restored and converted old work benches in the wood working room for the computer worktops.

Vista High has from the outset responded to the Khanya Project with excitement and joy, believing that it would open up many positive possibilities for the school. Through their exposure to the latest technology equipment and being able to tap into the Internet, Vista High is now able to offer their learners a better quality of education. As many learners have no access to libraries in the townships, the Khanya laboratory has also become an important resource for them when they are faced with assignments.

ICT training of the educators is ongoing and is being enjoyed as educators acquire new skills which they immediately put in to practice in their classrooms. Two ex-principals from the community have also joined in these training sessions, evidence of the strengthening of ties between the school and the community through the laboratory.

The demand for time in the laboratory is optimal and, once the educators have been fully trained, literacy and numeracy lessons in the laboratory will become the top priority at Vista High as they believe these two areas to be vital to the upliftment of the school and the community as a whole. Already the overwhelming belief is that Khanya opened the doors of learning at this school.
