Masibambisane Secondary

Masibambisane, isiXhosa for ‘to work together’, was established in 1995 in Gugulethu where it platooned with Sitembele Mathiso High. Since then the school has moved physical location to Woodstock and finally, in 2003 to its current location in Delft South.

Ninety percent of the school's learners are drawn from informal settlements in and around Cape Town. Unemployment and poverty plague the community that is also a victim of crime. Education and, in particular, the development of skills that enhance the learners’ chances of securing employment are the only way to break this cycle of poverty.

The school was therefore very excited at their inclusion in the Khanya Project in 2004 when they were fitted with a full Khanya computer laboratory and Mindset. Educators have been trained in basic computer literacy skills – the use of the MS suite – as well as the use of the technology for curriculum delivery. The maths team has been trained to use MasterMaths and Equation Editor and Draw, ensuring that their assessment tasks are of a professional standard and mathematically correct.

The use of technology at Masibambisane Secondary has resulted in the development of new skills and the acquisition of new knowledge. Technology now informs and shapes projects and lesson preparation while educators are also able to type up their question papers and learners use the technology for researching and presenting tasks and projects.

Delft South is a fast developing community which has a dire need for facilities to empower the community to upgrade their skills. The work initiated by the Khanya Project goes a long way towards achieving this objective as learners develop vital skills for their future.
