KHANYA SCHOOLS

W.D. Hendricks Primary

Situated 13 kilometres from Cape Town city, W D Hendricks Primary is on a quest to give the very best to their learners who are drawn from the poorest section of the population. Determined not to allow negative social factors like crime, violence, high unemployment and poverty distract them from their objective, this school’s interest in technology and the Khanya Project was sparked in 2001 when a representative from the school attended the launch in Kleinmond of one of Khanya’s first laboratories.

Despite living so close to the vibrant, developed and technology-driven city of Cape Town, poverty had prevented learners at WD Hendricks Primary from having ever seeing, touching or working on a computer. The Khanya laboratory at WD Hendricks has therefore been a real revelation and the learners enjoy every minute in it.

Any fears educators may have had about technology were quickly dispelled thanks to the thorough training educators received from their Khanya facilitator. They use their training in their teaching in the laboratory and they have great faith that the software will boost the literacy and numeracy levels of their learners.

Learners have taken to the technology like the proverbial ducks to water and their educators are frequently amazed at what they are capable of achieving when they are given the chance. A sense of excitement accompanies each lesson in the laboratory and an eagerness to learn in this exciting environment.

Initial networking problems delayed the start of lessons in computer literacy for the parents, but with these resolved, parents are keen to return to the keyboards. Technology is an integral way of life at W D Hendricks Primary, for everyone.
