Windermere Secondary
As Windermere High School is situated in a sub-economic area, most of the learners come from disadvantaged backgrounds. The operation and functioning of the school relies very heavily on the payment of the annual school fees and it is therefore difficult to find funding for other projects.
However, the staff and parents of Windermere High realised the importance of technology to the future of the children attending the school and they therefore managed to procure a Shuttleworth laboratory for the school. The computers donated for this laboratory are used for the benefit of the junior classes for curriculum delivery.
With an eye towards the Further Education and Training (F.E.T) band it became vital that the school established a second laboratory which would then be available to the grade 10s in particular as so many of the learning areas in F.E.T require the application of the technology. The school therefore came on board the Khanya Project at the end of 2004. A computer laboratory was therefore project managed by Khanya and installed with computers donated by Freddy Hirsch. A Khanya facilitator has been assigned to the school and educator training is well under way.
The learners look forward to their lessons in their new laboratory and they are often amazed at the information now available to them. Educators are very keen to use the technology for the development of their lessons and for their administrative tasks. They find the learners more attentive in the lessons and even behavioural patterns are affected as learners do not want to jeopardize their time in the laboratory.
