Capricorn Primary
Capricorn Primary is a brand new school that opened its doors in January 2008. It is situated on the Cape Flats and strives to restore the dignity of the children of Vrygrond; through education Capricorn Primary is determined to change the lives of generations of Vrygrond children.
The school is funded by the Vrygrond Community Development Trust and a number of overseas donors, some of whom attended the emotional opening of the school. Catering for learners in Grade R to Grade 3, Capricorn Primary is determined to have an impact on the education of these learners. The effect of the economic and social deprivation in places like Vrygrond is that the children are often between 2 and 3 years behind their educational levels for their age. The goal at Capricorn Primary is for learners, after 4 years at the school, to emerge at the educational levels appropriate for their age.
Capricorn Primary realised that computer technology would play a pivotal role in achieving this goal: if their learners were to develop the skills that would enable them to achieve in a technology driven society, Capricorn Primary had to offer these disadvantaged learners the opportunity to develop these skills. As part of the Khanya Project, a small computer facility has therefore been established. In addition, an Electronic Interactive White Board has been installed in each of the twelve classrooms.
Here learners can interact with technology. They learn basic computer literacy skills that will enable them to compete on a level playing field when they go to high school and they are able to meet the demands of a curriculum that is coming to rely increasingly on the use of technology. Lessons – particularly in mathematics and in language skills – are also conducted using the technology. This enables learners to progress at their own pace and it allows the slower learner more time to repeat and practise skills before they go on to more challenging concepts.
Educators enjoy the challenge of integrating the technology into their planning, their administration and their curriculum delivery. They find their learners more attentive when their lessons contain a variety of media and when their visual and auditory senses are engaged in the lesson.
While Capricorn Primary is still very young, its youth must not be taken for ignorance. They are fully aware of the task that lies ahead of them if they are to realise their goals, they are more than ready to take on the challenge and they have the determination to succeed.
