KHANYA SCHOOLS

Westcott Primary

With a proud heritage of serving the community of Diep River as well as communities further afield, Wescott Primary continues to reflect the real demographics of South African society. For 102 years the school has strived to live up to its motto, “Wescott, where the Individual Counts”, valuing each individual child as special and unique.

An important part of Wescott Primary’s vision for their learners is the development of skills in the use of technology. To this end the school established a Computers-4-Kids laboratory with seventeen workstations. This facility has been used effectively for computer literacy. However, class size has necessitated the splitting of classes for lessons in the laboratory because work stations are limited and educators have therefore not been able to use the computers as a tool for curriculum delivery.

Wescott Primary, in partnership with the Khanya Project, has been able to increase their capacity for technology with the establishment of a full Khanya laboratory housing 31 work stations, a server, printer and scanner. Technology is now fully integrated into the curriculum delivery process.

Every class – from Pre-Primary to Grade 7 – visits the laboratory twice a week and educators are more willing to incorporate technology into their daily lessons as a result of their own training in its use for curriculum delivery and their growing skill and confidence with technology. Training with the Khanya facilitator has been enthusiastically received and educators have rapidly become confident and effective users of technology. Several staff members have become avid users and their contagious enthusiasm for this medium motivates many a fellow educator and learner to improve their own skills and to derive the maximum benefit possible from this very powerful educational tool.

Learners thoroughly enjoy their visits to the Khanya laboratory where they are exposed to an entirely new way of learning in which they actively engage with the learning material and really have fun while learning.

Westcott Primary hopes in the future to expand their technology arsenal through the addition of educational software like Cami and through the installation of interactive white boards that they believe will further enhance integrated curriculum delivery.
