Bergvliet High

Bergvliet High School, situated in the residential suburb of Bergvliet in the Southern Suburbs of Cape Town, serves a broad spectrum of learners. They aim to be the school of choice in the community and to provide their learners with an all-round, world-class education that equips them to play a constructive role in the future of South Africa.

No strangers to technology, Bergvliet High made a commitment in 2005 to installing SMART Board interactive whiteboard technology into every classroom in the school – this in addition to the computer technology already available in their own laboratories. By the end of 2006, more than 20 SMART Boards had been installed, giving each learning area access to at least one dedicated SMART Board, while the mathematics and physical science departments have a full complement. By the end of 2007 a further 16 SMART Boards will have been installed and every educator and learner at the school will be in contact with a SMART Board in every lesson, every day. The SMART Boards are also networked and have Internet access.

The motivation for this huge commitment from the school is a simple believe that the SMART Boards make them better educators. It gives the educators at Bergvliet flexibility to use different teaching methods and strategies in the classroom and in their preparation, through it they can access the best educational resources and interactive material from around the world in a matter of minutes and they are able to produce more professional presentations.

It also enhances classroom management as learners are more focused and eager to interact with the whiteboard as it is a medium that is familiar to them. Pupils at Bergvliet High love the SMART Board technology; it makes them better learners. Bergvliet High uses SMART Board interactive whiteboards all day, across all learning areas. They are used as administrative tools, for teaching and revision work, for playing DVDs, videos and CDs, and for encouraging interactive learning.

Khanya initially became involved at this technologically proactive school through the provision of GIS software for the new FET curriculum in geography. Subsequently, Khanya has provided the Mindset package and, more recently, an Interactive whiteboard, data projector and software for mathematics, physical science and technology.

Bergvliet High has always been committed to community involvement and upliftment and for the past 16 years it has run a Continuing Education Programme – a programme of lifelong education courses run by the school’s teachers for the Bergvliet community. One of the courses now offered is a course on SMART Board interactive whiteboard technology. This course gives teachers from other schools the opportunity to gain experience and insight into effectively using this tool. Other courses on offer are ones that cover computer literacy and computer applications such as Excel, Word, email, PowerPoint and the Internet.
