KHANYA SCHOOLS

Voortrekker High

Although a relatively small school, Voortrekker High is a progressive thinking school and, true to character, had established a computer laboratory a number of years ago when they recognised the importance of computer skills for their learners.

Their own laboratory, used exclusively for the teaching of computer studies, was fully utilised and had no capacity to support curriculum delivery. As 2006 and the introduction of the Further Education and Training curriculum approached, it became clear that their facility would have to be upgraded if it were to meet the requirements for the delivery of the F.E.T curriculum. They were therefore delighted to be included in the Khanya Project in 2005.

Khanya has assisted the school with the establishment of a second laboratory. Here, mathematics, CAT and computyping will initially be taught but it is hoped to extend its use to other learning areas as educators become more competent and confident with the use of the technology for curriculum delivery.

The staff at Voortrekker High is enjoying the training provided by their Khanya facilitator. Some initially exhibited great reluctance to the changes envisaged with the incorporation of technology into their teaching, but with exposure, even they are coming to realize the real advantages the technology can hold for them and their learners.

Learners, on the other hand, needed no convincing, but took to the laboratory and the technology immediately. They love learning in this exciting and stimulating environment and their only regret is that they did not have access to some of the software, like CAMI Maths, earlier in their school careers. They enjoy the individual rate of progress that it allows and the facility to practise and fine-tune particular skills or weaknesses.

For some time, Voortrekker High had felt that they were clinging to a tried a tested formula without challenging themselves – educators or learners. Through their partnership with Khanya and their new computer laboratory, they believe that they are once again going forward and that the world is indeed their oyster, there for the taking.
