Voorspoed Primary
Voorspoed Primary is situated in Hanover Park, one of the poorest townships on the Cape Flats. Many of the learners come from indigent homes where single parents are the norm rather than the exception and the community has inherent social problems – poverty, malnutrition, overcrowding and degradation. Unemployment is high, drugs and drug related crimes are rife and learners are exposed to violence, both domestic and otherwise, on a daily basis. Positive role models are conspicuous by their absence.
Voorspoed Primary is in its 35th year of existence and, despite the very trying circumstances under which they work and their shoe string budget, they continue to deliver a quality service to the community they serve.
In recent years, Voorspoed Primary has come to believe that they were being left behind and that the gap between their learners and learners at other, more affluent schools was increasing at an alarming rate. The culprit: a total lack of technology. With no funding available for this at all, the only technology or computers at the school were those restricted to administrative purposes. Very few learners had been exposed to technology and even fewer had any knowledge of the amazing world of the internet and e-mail.
Their inclusion in the Khanya Project in 2008 means that their dream of introducing technology into the curriculum delivery process will now be realised. With the technology that Khanya will bring to the school many doors of opportunity will be opened to the learners at Voorspoed Primary.
A venue has been identified and contractors for the various installations have been sourced. The Implementation Project Manager is working very closely with the school in their efforts to ensure that there is steady progress in their efforts to become an e-school.
Considering the empowering experiences that other Khanya partner schools enjoy, Voorspoed Primary stands to reap the rewards of patience as they stand on the threshold of the world of information accessed through Information and Communications Technology.
