Belmor Primary
Situated at the corner of Hanover Park Avenue and Downberg Road, Belmor Primary serves as a beacon in its community. Parents of the school have taken ownership of the school and this has ensured that the school has been only lightly affected by gang violence that often plagues the community and had kept the community at the centre of media interest for quite some time. Rising above all this negativity, however, is Belmor Primary, a school with learners eager to excel - four of their learners were rewarded in 2006 by being selected to attend the Oprah Winfrey School.
Belmor Primary believes that if they are to continue to offer their learners a way to rise above their often crippling home circumstances and their environment, technology will hold the key. They believe that by entering the world of technology they will be able to create a more powerful platform for their learners and that the learners, the parents and the broader community will benefit from the introduction of the Khanya Project to the school. Not only will learners now be able to explore the world through technology, but learners who are identified as having learning difficulties are now able to use the technology to improve the areas in which they experience difficulties.
Initial fears about security and the educators’ limited knowledge of computers have been quelled – thanks to the support and guidance of the Khanya Project. With quality and security measuring up to Khanya’s strict standards, the laboratory at Belmor Primary was opened and educators look forward to their weekly computer lessons with their facilitator. Receptive to change and eager to learn, educators have mastered basic computer literacy and are exploring the educational software that they then use to great effect with their learners. Administrative work – the bane of many a teacher’s life – is now dealt with efficiently and more time can be spent on finding interesting ways of bringing technology into their learners’ lessons.
Learners at Belmor Primary can hardly contain their excitement when their scheduled day in the laboratory arrives – and it is often difficult to prise them out of their seats when the session is over! Learners are able to progress at their own pace and they proudly surge ahead when they have successfully completed a task. Instant assessment acts as a major motivating factor and learners have responded well to the visual aspect of learning in this highly stimulating environment.
A school that is community driven, Belmor Primary will open their laboratory to the community so they too can derive the benefit of technology. Basic computer literacy courses will be offered that will enable community members to skill themselves for better employment and, so doing, hopefully break the cycle of poverty that cripples communities such as this.
