South Peninsula High School

South Peninsula High School, one of the 11 pilot schools identified by the Western Cape Education Department to participate in the Khanya Mathematics Project, is a model of community perseverance. Although it initially served the children of farm labourers in the Constantia area, parents once displaced by the Group Areas Act continue to support the school in its endeavour to promote academic excellence.

The learners continue to benefit from the curriculum support through Information and Communication Technology (ICT) that the Khanya Project provides. At South Peninsula High the Khanya Project, with the generous assistance of one of its partners DG Murray Trust, aims to increase the number of learners studying Mathematics on the higher grade. The school community embraces opportunities for progress. In 1985 the school received its first 25 computers from the education department since educators were willing to undergo the necessary training. In 1993 the extended school community in the form of the South Peninsula High Alumni Association based in Toronto, Canada, replaced those computers with 25 newer computers.

The launch of the Khanya Project signalled a new dimension to the approach of the Mathematics department to the use of ICT. The Khanya Project provides curriculum support using ICT. Computer literacy skills are therefore acquired more incidentally and the focus of Khanya Project Curriculum Facilitators is the selection and integration of educational software with the curriculum. The school now enjoys an improved learner performance in Mathematics on the Higher Grade. Computer-generated administrative and academic reports and records reveal the commitment of educators to improving not only their skills in curriculum delivery and computer literacy, but also to their professional development. Increasing enrolment for and success in the study of Mathematics on the Higher Grade motivates the Khanya Project Team to pursue its goal of equipping and empowering more learners to function as responsible citizens of the world.

The school showed a keen interest to be part of the Khanya Science Pilot project. As part of this pilot, the school received dataloggers and science software to use in the Science laboratory. Using technology to collect and analyse data is one way of demystifying Science and therefore it encourages more learners to do science.
