Grassy Park Secondary

Grassy Park High is situated in the residential area for which it is named, Grassy Park, Cape Town. It serves a disadvantaged community and the school’s vision is to be a community based school which contributes to the development of the country by providing holistic educational international standards of excellence and leadership.

In line with this vision, the school established a computer laboratory in 2000 that could place the learners in touch with the international trends and developments in education. With the high cost of maintenance of technology it was a relief to become part of the Khanya Project in 2003. A second laboratory was established at the school and the focus here was on the delivery of mathematics. For this reason, Master Maths was installed and the 25 computers in this laboratory are used primarily for instruction in mathematics and science.

With the growing importance of technology in society, the demands made on the computer facilities increased and it rapidly became evident that an additional facility would be required if technology were to serve the needs of all the learners at the school. With Khanya project managing and a generous sponsorship from Dell, a third laboratory was established in 2006. In addition, a Mindset Room was also established by Khanya at Grassy Park High with an Interactive Electronic Whiteboard, a data projector and a laptop.

Educators are ecstatic about the technology and are eager to learn more about new technology. In the computer laboratory they have discovered an amazing teaching tool that is able to accommodate all learning styles. The Electronic Interactive Whiteboard, when used in conjunction with other teaching aids, has enabled them to multitask, providing individual attention where it is needed while other learners are engaged in the lesson. They have found that when learners are able to interact with authentic, relevant resources such as clippings, photographs and texts, the learning environment is enhanced and learners learn more readily and with greater degrees of success.

The only drawback as far as the educators are concerned is that the computer facility is restricted in its use – only one class at a time can have access – and they eagerly anticipate a time when all classrooms may be equipped in a similar fashion.

Learners have taken to the technology now available to them like the proverbial ducks to water. They eagerly anticipate each lesson in one of the laboratories and they are very focused and task-oriented when in this environment. They are introduced to new concepts in the laboratory that are then reinforced back in the classroom, or they practice and drill skills taught in the classroom in the laboratory.

With so many developments in technology at Grassy Park High, it is clear that they are indeed, with Khanya’s help, trying to live up to their aim of delivering international educational standards.
