Heathfield HS

Heathfield High School is not new to the world of information technology. Prior to becoming involved with the Khanya Project, Heathfield had established a Shuttleworth computer laboratory where computer literacy was offered to the learners.

A second computer laboratory became a necessity as the school prepared itself for the Further Education and Training (F.E.T) curriculum which came into practice in 2006. The F.E.T requires that certain parts of the syllabus in a number of learning areas is taught through the medium of computers and the single laboratory at Heathfield could not cope with these demands. In addition, the school was identified as a Dinaledi School and they are determined to become a school of excellence in the field of mathematics and science. The Khanya laboratory is mostly used for mathematics and mathematical literacy and mathematics educators used the opportunity to empower themselves to use technology effectively in their teaching by being part of the Khanya mathematics intervention. The availability of Mindset Learn at Heathfield High has also encouraged other learning areas to use technology in their teaching.

Given the successful integration of technology thus far, Heathfield Secondary felt confident enough to expand their technology to more classrooms through the introduction of a mobile technology that is linked to the server. The mathematics and mathematical literacy classes benefit enormously from the availability of this facility at the school.
