KHANYA SCHOOLS

Mount View Secondary

Mount View Secondary's dream of a proper computer laboratory for their learners was initiated six years ago when the school raised funds and bought 16 PCs. Their dream: ensuring the computer literacy of their learners. The fact that these PCs are still in use for CompuTyping is a testament to the way in which they have been looked after.

As with all things electronic, however, the more one has, the more one knows is out there for the having and the more one desires. Mount View was no exception and, with their brand new Khanya computer laboratory, a new era has begun at the school. The driving force behind the new laboratory was Mr Ian Bull whose tenacity ensured that no-one lost sight of the goal. Mr Bull was supported by the staff of the school, who were also committed to the dream and took his classes uncomplainingly when he was busy in the laboratory, and members of the community who were employed to do some of the infrastructure work. The Khanya laboratory at Mount View is living proof of Khanya's commitment to community as the entire community became involved in and excited about the school's new laboratory.

Mount View, having achieved so much, is not resting on their laurels but already has plans in place to extend the dream even further. They hope to extend the infrastructure further and , eventually, to convert an entire wing of the school into an IT centre. For now, they plan to ensure that all their learners are computer literate as this may equip them better for the future job market. They also plan to open the laboratory to the community for literacy classes. Aside from this, they have very practical plans for the application of the laboratory: they wish to access information from their feeder primary schools about the learners who attend Mount View. Often, these records are not sent on to secondary schools when learners progress to high school.

The main aim, however, of the Khanya laboratory remains to make curriculum delivery more exciting for the learners and thus, it is hoped, they will be encouraged to do better and to be more enthusiastic about their studies. The emphasis will be on mathematics: to increase the number of learners doing maths and to improve the results of those already doing it. Other subjects will also have to use IT with the introduction of FET in 2006.

In addition, the staff will also undergo extensive training in the technology as Mount View establishes itself as an e-school. They look forward to using the technology to ease their administrative load and to assist in their lesson preparation, thus making their lessons more relevant and more interesting for the learners.
