Alicedale Primary
One of the oldest schools in the Athlone, Alicedale Primary has served learners of diverse socio-economic and cultural background since 1940. Today, their learners are drawn from the immediate neighbourhood as well as from townships like Langua, Gugulethu, Nyanga, Khayelitsha, Crossroads and Delft.
Alicedale Primary acknowledged the importance of technology in the daily lives of their learners and they wanted to give their learners an edge by introducing them to IT in primary school. Their journey into the world of technology therefore began in the early 1990’s when they purchased 10 computers. A few years of repayments on these found them with depleted funds and computers badly in need of upgrading. Alicedale Primary then invested in 20 refurbished Pentium 1 computers and finally in 2004 they were fortunate to receive a Tuxlab from the Shuttleworth Foundation. With this technology they were able to connect to the internet and in 2005 they proudly opened their Internet Café to the community.
In 2006 Alicedale Primary were invited to join the Khanya Project. They were convinced that their Lynux OpenSource Tuxlab would be complement by a Khanya computer laboratory that could run Microsoft software and learner numbers had begun to put pressure on their existing laboratory. However, with very limited funding, they feared that they would be unable to grasp this opportunity. With the support of staff and donors they were able to complete the infrastructure of their new laboratory and in 2007 their Khanya laboratory went into full operation.
The Khanya laboratory has added a new dimension to the technology at the school and the IT facilitation and training provided by Khanya is ensuring that staff of skilled to make the most effective use of the laboratory and the educational software. Educators, many of whom had never worked on a computer before, enjoy their training and feel confident taking their learners to the computer laboratory. In time, Alicedale Primary intend to manage all their administration electronically so all staff can access any relevant information via the technology.
Learners have quickly become acquainted with the new software and with using the headphones. There is an atmosphere of total excitement every time learners enter the Khanya laboratory as new applications are taught and discovered every time. With lessons timetabled each class has access to the laboratory twice a week – once for computer literacy and the second time for curriculum development – and learners are thriving in this thoroughly interactive and stimulating environment.
In the near future, Alicedale Primary hope to re-open their internet café and they would also like to offer computer literacy courses to the community. To this end, some staff have agreed to be assessed for the INGOTS IT Assessors Course that will qualify them to do IT facilitation and the grade 7 learners are also hoping to qualify for their first level Bronze INGOT certificate before they leave the school.
