Welcome Primary
With humble beginnings as a church school established to meet the needs of the Welcome community, Welcome Primary has developed from a wood and iron structure into the beautiful school it is today. The divergent community drawn from Welcome Estate in Athlone ranges from the low socio-economic group to those with a moderate income; at least 60% of the parents whose children attend this school are unemployed.
With a view to providing learners and educators with some skills in technology, Welcome Primary had managed to secure ten computers. Clearly, however, the limited number of computers that they had managed to acquire severely restricted the scope of technology application at the school. It was therefore with great excitement that Welcome Primary received the news of their inclusion in the Khanya Project in 2007.
Welcome Primary share Khanya’s vision of the classroom of the 21st century where technology is available to all, it is user friendly, curriculum based and internet accessed. With Khanya’s commitment to the school, they believe that they have a greater chance of being able to realise this vision. The additional technology and the training that Khanya will provide will mean that more resources will be available to the learners – both for classroom activities and for research.
Staff, the SGB and learners are very excited about the developments at their school. Considering the empowering experiences that other Khanya partner schools enjoy, Welcome Primary stands to reap the rewards of patience as they stand on the threshold of the world of information accessed through Information and Communications Technology.
