Portavue Primary
The only primary school in the Greenhaven area, Portavue Primary first opened its doors to learners within this residential area as well as to learners in neighbouring areas in 1966. The school has seen dramatic changes in its school community over the years and today boasts a multi-cultural and multi-racial school community from all over the Cape Flats, a community richly diverse in culture, religion and language. While many learners speak Afrikaans and Xhosa as their home languages, the preferred language of instruction is English.
Many of the learners at Portavue Primary come from single-parent homes, or are being raised by their grandparents. While supportive of the school’s initiatives, few of the parents are able to assist their children with academic tasks and few learners have access to modern technology in the home. With a school budget consumed by everyday running costs, it is only with their inclusion in the Khanya Project in 2008 that Portavue Primary could realistically consider the establishment of a computer laboratory that would give their learners much needed access to technology.
Large classes with varying levels of ability means that educators have their work cut out meeting the challenge of capturing every learner’s attention and addressing the unique learning needs of each child. A computer laboratory will give learners more learning opportunities and it will allow educators to designing more interactive and more stimulating lessons. Learners have an aptitude for things technological. With access to technology, this aptitude can be put to use in the learning process.
Technology plays a pivotal role in society today and Portavue Primary’s learners were at a distinct disadvantage because they did not have access to technology and were therefore not able to equip themselves to meet the demands of society. With Khanya’s support and guidance, the school will soon have a computer laboratory where learners will develop basic computer literacy skills, they will be exposed to the curriculum via this excitingly interactive medium and they will have access to resources unimagined before.
