Groenvlei Secondary
When Groenvlei High School approached the Khanya Project for assistance they had already established their own computer laboratory. They used the computers for training in Computer Literacy but had not the resources to acquire educational software that would enable curriculum delivery through this medium. The Khanya Project presented a more focused approach with an emphasis on curriculum delivery in Mathematics using ICT and on language development, both of these being areas of particular concern for Gronevlei High.
While computer literacy continues to be the focus in their first laboratory, their Khanya laboratory is being used by the grade 8,9 and 10 learners for mathematics, mathematical literacy, primary language and CAT. Learners are in the clouds about this new facility and eagerly anticipate their exciting lessons in the laboratory. Their skills have developed at a fast rate and they are able to progress at their own pace, thus a sense of control over their own learning has developed.
Groenvlei Secondary educators have great expectations of their Khanya laboratory and of what they will be able to achieve in it once they have completed their training. Their openminded and eager to learn attitude towards this training with their Khanya facilitator means that they are able to work through the modules quickly and then put these skills into practice in the classroom. Through their training they are realizing how the technology can improve their curriculum delivery, not only in the laboratory, but in the classroom too.
Groenvlei Secondary is a purpose driven school. With their two laboratories functioning optimally, they hope to establish an Internet Café in the Khanya laboratory for the use of the community and they would like to offer computer classes to members of the community, particularly young people who have not completed school and wish to develop skills that are needed to secure employment.
While the use of technology in the curriculum process is not new to them, Groenvlei High is conscious of how rapidly things change and develop in the world of IT and are excited about being part of an initiative which is on the forefront of ICT developments in education.
