KHANYA SCHOOLS

Phoenix Secondary

Situated in one of the toughest gang-infested areas in Cape Town, Phoenix Secondary – established in 1983 - caters for a large community that is riddled with unemployment and cannot provide funds for the running of the school.

Despite these limitations, they managed to acquire seventeen computers using donations and money received from the Ministerial Award in 2002. The effective use of this technology to teach Computer Literacy has made learners more eligible for employment. The Khanya Project's donation of a further eight computers shifted their focus to the use of the laboratory for curriculum delivery, especially in Mathematics.

Phoenix Secondary is very focused on community involvement and the Khanya laboratory has therefore been used to maximum effect with afternoon and evening Computer Literacy classes for the parents and broader community. However the computers have aged and they were no longer able to cope with the demands of new software. For this reason Khanya initiated a second laboratory at the school.

This initiative will now enable the school to continue to use their facilities to the full benefit for learners, educators and the wider community. Computer literacy is taught in the older laboratory while the new laboratory supports MasterMaths successfully and there is access to the Internet to aid teaching and learning. Educators and learners are delighted with the upgrade and improvements that have been made. The Internet is being used to research learning and teaching materials and for research tasks and the educators are using the new computers for the completion of their administrative tasks.

At Phoenix Secondary the Khanya Project has shown its sensitivity to the needs of the individual school, catering its involvement and contribution to the unique and changing needs of the school.
