Spes Bona High

Spes Bona is one of the WCED’s Focus School and the Khanya laboratory at the school plays an integral part of the school’s commitment to delivering the curriculum via Information and Communications Technology.

The computer laboratory has been fully functional since the beginning of 2006 and educators at Spes Bona have been hard at work completing their training in integrating ICT into the curriculum delivery process, with particular emphasis on the new FET curriculum.

Educators are now confidently using the laboratory for the completion of all administrative tasks and Internet and email access has allowed the educators and learners to broaden the scope of curriculum delivery with information that is so easy to obtain. The use of Cami software, as well as other educational software has ensured that learners are given every opportunity to improve their mathematics results.

So enthusiastic are the learners at Spes Bona in their support of the laboratory that break times and after school the laboratory is abuzz with learners – either accessing resources via the internet or putting together projects that are now all typed and delivered to educators in a most professional manner.

Mindset Learn has also been installed in the Khanya laboratory and Grade 10 – 12 learners and educators now have access to lessons in all learning areas. Mindset Learn contextualizes learning and shows its relevance to the world beyond the confines of the classroom. Its interactive nature allows learners to view video footage and thus brings relevance to text learning.

In line with their status as a Focus School, Spes Bona High has recently had a new Technical Drawing computer laboratory installed. The three technology rooms have also each been equipped with 8 desktop PC’s, a laptop, a data projector and an Electronic Interactive Whiteboard.

The injection of technology into the school has revitalised the spirits of educators and learners alike who now approach the teaching and learning process with enthusiasm and a desire to learn. In a school such as this learners are encouraged to take responsibility for their own learning and they rise to the challenge with commitment and a responsible work ethic.
