St. Raphael's Primary
Established in 1929 with only 160 learners, St Raphael’s Primary serves the learners of the Athlone area. This church school aims at developing all their learners to their full potential in a learning environment that encompasses both discipline and happiness.
When the school identified the need for a computer laboratory in 1999, Old Mutual kindly stepped to the fore and donated 15 computers that they had written off. A family from the community who had suffered a tragic loss donated the air-conditioning for the laboratory and made a sizeable cash contribution towards this laboratory that was inaugurated in October 1999 and in which learners received computer lessons for the first time.
As is wont with things technological, the computers rapidly became outdated and by 2002 many of them were no longer functioning and the school could no longer afford to pay a teacher to manage the laboratory. Lessons that had been on offer in the laboratory ended as teachers lacked the training to use the laboratory.
The Khanya Project’s proposal for a new laboratory in 2006 therefore came as welcome news. Not only would their current facility be updated, but a fully equipped Khanya laboratory would be installed. With donations received from parents, donors and a series of fundraisers, St Raphael’s Primary had managed to install the necessary infrastructure and after 18 months of tireless and enthusiastic work by the educators, the Khanya laboratory was installed and fully functional.
Educators and support staff at St Raphael’s R C Primary are currently undergoing ITC training and they hope to be certified by the end of 2007. The enthusiasm of the principal and his educators for this incredibly powerful teaching tool is infectious and learners can hardly wait for their lessons in the new laboratory.
