KHANYA SCHOOLS

St. Theresa R.C. Primary

Established in 1935 in Welcome Estate by the Capuchin Fathers and the Holy Cross Sisters, St Theresa’s Primary has served the community of Heideveld, Welcome Estate and Vanguard Estate with pride. Today more than 50% of their learners are transported to school from areas as far afield as Manenberg, Bonteheuwel, Khayelitsha, Mitchell’s Plan, Langa and Guguletu.

As computers have become an increasingly important feature of life, St Theresa’s has dreamt for many years of introducing technology to their learners. They believe that it is important to expose children to technology at an early age and they feel it is particularly important in the lives of learners such as those served by their school as they have very little educational stimulation in their homes. Technology would also open new horizons and opportunities for both their learners and their educators.

The news that they were to be included in the Khanya Project was therefore greeted with excitement and all role players are thrilled with their new computer facility. The educators envisage being trained to use the technology to manage their administration more efficiently and as a teaching and learning tool. With technology they believe their teaching methods will be more engaging and will attract and maintain the interest of the learners more so than traditional teaching methods. Training with their Khanya facilitator is well under way and educators are conducting lessons in the laboratory, focussing initially on the enhancement of literacy and numerical skills.

Learners anticipate each visit to the laboratory where they are not only exposed to the educational software but they are also developing basic computer literacy skills. At St Theresa Primary the introduction of technology will also impact positively on learner enrolment, as many parents choose a school where their children will be exposed to technology.

The challenge for St Theresa’s RC Primary now lies in using their gratitude for the opportunity that has been made available to them in the form of the laboratory to fire their efforts to integrate technology into the curriculum delivery at the school. In this way they will ensure that each learner gains the maximum benefit from their laboratory and walks away from the school at the end of their primary school education with valuable skills that will serve them for a lifetime.
