Nomsa Mapongwana Primary

Although Nomsa Mapongwana Primary was initially identified as part of the Telkom Project, Khanya became involved in 2002.

Khanya provide curriculum software and a facilitator to train the staff. Many regard the facilitator as a support system that ensures that certain classroom skills and planning are enhanced. Educators are taking full advantage of curriculum software on Khanya's Learning Management System

The standard of learning, lesson preparation and participation has improved. Khanya's focus on numeracy and literacy is starting to pay off. The software donated to the school by MECER should boost the school's literacy program.

The interest in technology has grown so much at the school that learners are linking up with schools overseas. The partnership between Nomsa Mapongwana and Think.Com, a free web based environment for primary school, has helped learners improve their reading and writing skills remarkably. Learners create their own websites and interact with other learners in a different country.

The spirit of empowerment is so strong at Nomsa Mapongwana that the school decided to upgrade the computer laboratory. Additional technology was purchased, the most recent being a Data projector, a scanner, a colour Printer and 4 Pentium IV computers. This school has gone a long way to realizing Khanya's vision of independent sustainability rather than handouts.
