Chris Hani Secondary

Situated in the Makhaza area of Khayelitsha, close to Baden Powell drive, Chris Hani Secondary serves the immediate community of Khayelitsha as well as many learners from the Eastern Cape. Despite the social and economic difficulties that face this school and its learners daily, they have set their sights on excellence and, in the 2003 Grade Twelve final examinations, they were rewarded with a credible six “A” symbols in Mathematics.

The Khanya Project first became involved at Chris Hani Secondary in 2003 when it became clear that the computer laboratory which they had self-funded could not meet the demands of such a huge school. A second laboratory was thus installed and the school community all participated enthusiastically in the installation of the infrastructure of the new laboratory. In addition, the school is also part of the Khanya Science Pilot and 5 computers with Crocodile Clips software and dataharvest soft – and hardware have been installed. These are used in conjunction with a dataprojector and an interactive electronic whiteboard.

Thanks to the commitment of the Khanya team at this school, learners at Chris Hani Secondary are now exposed to different ways of using technology in their learning and in their thinking in mathematics, English and science. Educators too benefit as they expand their teaching practice. Both educators and learners have become confident in the use of the computers and they can often be found in the laboratory after school either doing research or surfing the Internet.

Educators have received basic training in the MS Office package and the mathematics department has been trained in MasterMaths which they find both a valuable addition to their teaching arsenal and practical. Although the Science laboratory is a relatively new addition, educators have received some training in the use of the technology and they are excited about the possibilities it will open up in the classroom.

The Khanya computer laboratory at Chris Hani Secondary is a constant hive of activity – not only used by the educators and learners but also by the EMDC for the training of others in the education community. Chris Hani Secondary is already experiencing the benefits of their partnership with the Khanya Project as their learners and educators tackle their respective tasks with renewed enthusiasm and excitement that can only be good for the educational process.
