Oscar Mpetha

Oscar Mpetha High School was one of the first high schools established in the suburb of Nyanga and has no fewer than six primary schools as its feeder schools.

From the humble beginnings of one computer for the secretary, the number has grown to the current figure reflected here, thanks to a number of generous donations. The dream of being empowered to use technology generally, but more specifically as a teaching aid, became a reality when the Khanya Project was launched at the school thanks to the partnership between this project and the Anglo American Chairman's Fund.

Oscar Mpetha Secondary recently extended their technology base with a Telkom/Khanya/Truworths laboratory, thus managing to involve three NGO’s in one laboratory. Khanya provided the infrastructure for the new laboratory while Telkom provided the computers and Truworths provided the chairs and a facilitator who will take responsibility for computer literacy for grades 8 and 9.

Mathematics educators wasted no time in using the available software as it covers the complete syllabus and allows the learners to progress at their own pace. All relevant training has been completed at the school and the learners are already showing an improvement in their performance.

A major frustration to educators and learners alike was when the school fell victim to extensive burglaries and had to vacate the computer laboratory. Such was the pressure brought to bear by educators and learners that upgraded security measures were quickly put in place and the laboratory is once again fully functional.

A symbol of the school’s commitment to technology integrated curriculum delivery was when the physical science educator at Oscar Mpetha was selected to attend an International Science Conference in China as part of a South African contingent.

A valuable tool in today's world is the ability to use basic computer skills and the learners at Oscar Mpetha High School feel that they have now been given an opportunity to show just how good they are and they are determined to grasp that opportunity and make it work for them.
