Caradale Primary

Caradale Primary is situated in Rocklands, Mitchell’s Plain. Poverty and all evils associated with it are rife in the immediate community and over 60% of the learners come from areas in Lower Cross Roads, Khayelitsha and Nyanga. While the school recognised that a computer laboratory had become an absolute necessity if they were to equip their learners to rise above their circumstances, their lack of financial resources meant that it was only through their contact with the Khanya Project and a generous donation by SA Breweries in 2005 that the dream of technology could finally be realised. With Khanya’s technical guidance and support, a computer laboratory has been installed to house the computers donated by S A Breweries together with a further 25 supplied by Khanya.

Excitement and support for the project meant that the school raised the funds and installed the required infrastructure to Khanya’s specifications very speedily and, with hardware and software installed in the facility, the laboratory is set to become an integral part of the educational process at Caradale Primary.

Few learners have access to computers at home and for many their first face-to-face contact with technology is in their Khanya laboratory. Learners are understandably very excited and enthused every time they have a lesson in the laboratory. They are progressing well and their educators are amazed at how quickly they have adapted to this form of instruction. Learners are focusing initially on literature and mathematics exercises and a marked change in attitude towards these learning areas is already evident.

While some educators were slightly anxious about the move towards the integration of technology into curriculum delivery, they have taken to the technology like ducks to water. Skills Development Projects at the school have focused on mastering computer skills and educators committed themselves to a training programme, E-Active. This, together with the ongoing support of their Khanya facilitator, has resulted in a highly motivated group and training sessions are characterised by information sharing and camaraderie in a relaxed atmosphere. Educators have been trained in the use of CAMI educational software for mathematics and literature, Internet and e-mail as well as the Microsoft suite of software. Revitalised by their training, educators believe that their newly developed computer skills will help them with their planning and diagnostics and, ultimately, it will lessen their workload.

The educators and learners at Caradale Primary have an exciting “Khanya journey” ahead. They have been bitten by the techno-bug thanks to the infectious enthusiasm of their Computer Committee who has them ‘surfing the net’ and ‘shopping online’ as they move towards becoming citizens of the global village of the 21st century.

As a community school, Caradale Primary plans to use the laboratory to the advantage of the immediate community by offering classes in computer literacy for community members who want to broaden their horizons and improve their work-related skills.

The Khanya laboratory at Caradale Primary is well used and a real hive of activity as educators, parents and learners are committed to making the technology work for them.
