Cornflower Primary

Cornflower Primary serves the under-privileged community of Lentegeur, Mitchell’s Plain. Unemployment is high and the surrounding community is plagued with crime, drugs and the violence perpetrated by gangs. Established in 1985, Cornflower Primary has strived over the years to provide their learners with the skills to rise above these often crippling circumstances to make a better life for themselves.

In line with this vision, Cornflower Primary took the initiative and established its own computer laboratory with 25 computers. This facility has since been enlarged to a capacity of 45 computers where learners are exposed to basic computer literacy skills. The community has also benefited from the very popular accredited basic and advanced computer courses that have been offered in the laboratory under the guidance of Mr Aslam Galie.

Cornflower Primary’s inclusion in the Khanya Project will enable the school to remain abreast of developments in the fast changing world of technology. Along with their existing laboratory, they will now have Interactive Electronic Whiteboards, Data Projectors and Laptops added to their technology arsenal. Educational software such as Cami will enhance the integration of technology into curriculum delivery. Training by a Khanya facilitator will take educators beyond the basic use of technology, ensuring that they become confident and capable users of technology in their planning, preparation, administration and presentation of lessons.

Through their partnership with the Khanya Project, Cornflower Primary is certain that the educational process at the school will be enhanced and developed. Learners will benefit from the software programs and numeracy and literacy levels will improve.

The computer laboratory at Cornflower Primary is set to become a training centre of note for educators (both at this school and at other schools in the area), learners and members of the public.
