Hazeldene Primary
Hazeldene Primary had thought to get ahead of the pack and had initiated a drive to install technology. What they had not managed to factor in to their plans was the huge cost involved in such an undertaking, the cost in sustaining the technology once installed and the size of facility they would have to establish for it to be practical. The limited number of computers they were thus able to install was totally inadequate to meet all but the most rudimentary of their requirements and these soon became outdated. It rapidly became clear that curriculum delivery through technology was not going to be possible with the equipment they had. In 2004 Hazeldene Primary became part of the Khanya Project and a computer laboratory for curriculum delivery has been developed at the school. Along with the laboratory, Hazeldene Primary received appropriate educational software and their educators have been trained by their Khanya facilitator. Educators have responded enthusiastically to this new teaching tool. Not only is it a resource that will help them improve their preparation for lessons and improve learning, it has also gone a significant way towards easing their administrative load. Their training has resulted in a great deal of renewed excitement for teaching among the educators and, as their skills have developed, so too has their understanding of the role that technology can now play in the educational process and their support of this. Learners too are enthusiastic about lessons in this interactive and stimulating environment that is changing the face of the learning process at Hazeldene Primary.
