Hyacinth Primary

Hyacinth Primary had recognised the value technology would add to the learning and teaching experience, but with limited available resources they had not been able to see their way forward to installing their own computer laboratory. They had managed to establish a computer room for the staff and the benefits accrued from this only made them more keen to establish a laboratory in which the educators could be trained and the learners could be exposed regularly to the curriculum through technology.

It was therefore with excitement that Hyacinth joined the Khanya family in August 2005. A suitable and secure venue was very quickly identified and the school community rapidly saw to the upgrading of the infrastructure. They prepared the work tops, laid new carpets and fitted new blinds to the windows. Burglar bars and an alarm system were also installed so that the venue could be secured.

As Hyacinth Primary lives in an age of advanced technology, they felt the need to expose their learners to the latest software which would assist them not only in becoming computer literate, but would also assist them with the delivery of tasks and projects. With their Khanya laboratory, this is now a reality and learners are very excited about their lessons in the laboratory. They have been introduced to Cami and have found the activities interesting and challenging. They now have a new incentive to listen to their educators: they want to have lessons on the computers. Learners are finding that learning can be more fun than simply sitting in the classroom when they can interact with the technology too.

Educators at Hyacinth Primary are very excited about the technology. For some, it has been a milestone to learn how to use the basic programmes and develop their lessons on programs like MS Word and MS PowerPoint. Now, even more than when it was just an idea, staff are keen to integrate their lessons with the technology.

Khanya’s involvement at this school has not only motivated educators and learners, but has given them a sense of hope for the future. Learners at Hyacinth Primary can now look forward to a future where IT will enhance their potential to cope with the challenges of a global economy and the global village.

Hyacinth Primary are not resting with this technology alone, but have already ordered Interactive Electronic White Boards and they plan to make the laboratory sustainable by offering it to the local community for the teaching of computer literacy and as an Internet Café. With both feet firmly planted on the Information Super Highway, Hyacinth Primary knows that they are going places.
