West End Primary
No strangers to technology, West End Primary had launched a Shuttleworth computer laboratory in 2001. Learners and educators responded enthusiastically to the technology but its use was confined to irregular visits by classes for instruction in basic computer literacy. In 2004 the school was visited by the Khanya Project and introduced to the concept of curriculum delivery through technology. The Khanya visit opened the educators’ eyes to the wealth of possibilities a laboratory offered for integrated and interesting lessons and West End Primary eagerly became Khanya partners and began the process towards the establishment of a second laboratory – one that would focus on curriculum delivery.
The science laboratory was quickly identified as the venue most suitable for the future computer laboratory and work began on the installation of the infrastructure. The school community – educators and parents – took charge of this part of the project and the room was renovated, electric cabling was installed for 29 network points, a whiteboard was fitted and airconditioning was installed.
With the newly renovated facility ready, the hardware and software was installed and classes at West End Primary began using the technology in 2006. With staff still fairly uncertain of their skills in technology, use was initially fairly limited. However, as skills have developed, so too has confidence and classes now visit the laboratory regularly according to a timetable.
LAN training and regular training with the Khanya facilitator has resulted in a complete embracing of technology by educators at West End Primary. They use it for their administrative work and to access resources in preparation for lessons. They enjoy taking classes to the laboratory where they find learners more focused and more eager to participate productively in lessons.
The introduction of curriculum delivery through technology may have had a bumpy start at West End Primary with obstacles such as limited funding and anxiety about how to use the technology and how it could be integrated with the curriculum. Perseverance won through, however, and everyone at West End Primary is determined to make the technology work to the benefit of all, especially the learners.
